Our Story

They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Cliché as it may be, we reckon the age-old saying rings true for a lot of things these days. Cars? Yep. Houses? You bet. Clothes? Absolutely.

Cups? Well… we’ve got some thoughts.

But first, cast your mind back to the sunny, sepia-toned 60s. The Ford Falcon’s packed, The Easybeats are blaring, the surfboards are waxed, and you’re off to the beach.

Arriving in style, you run down onto the piping hot sand, not a care in the world. Pop the Esky, grab a Lime Coola and watch it fizz into the cobalt blue, aluminium cup in your hand, feeling the coolness of its metal on your skin.

Vibrant and virtually indestructible, anodised aluminium cups were everywhere in Australia during the 50s, 60s and 70s. In fact, when it comes to icon status, they rivalled The Hills Hoist (we’ll leave the goon bag out of this), or a smear of Zinc cream across the nose.

Simply put, they were a big deal.

Today, you can still find them, but sadly, they’re a dying breed. Perhaps you’ll spot a lone cup in nan’s garage, or a dinged set in Uncle John’s shed.

We fell in love with the cups when we spotted some at our local vintage store. Dented and scratched, but still unmissable, our hearts were captured by their electric colour, their weight, their sturdiness and their character.

We snapped them up, fell deeply in love, and then started thinking how do we share them with the world?

The answer? We set out to make them ourselves, just like they used to…but better.

We kept the solid weight, bold, anodised colour and no-fuss design, and added premium aluminium and a modern, food-safe finish. Our cups are made to throw in the back of the car, cheers with mates and chill at the beach – just like they used to be.

A great set deserves an equally great home. That’s why each Maits set comes packed in a hand-crafted leather case, made from top-tier, ruggedly handsome leather that, like us, will look even better with age.

Your old mates lasted a lifetime. Your new Maits will do the same.
